6:30 – 7:30 am
Whale Shark Dock
6 hours
This activity is the most fascinating in Holbox, every year from June to September hundreds of whale sharks come to the island in search of their favorite food, plankton. Despite their enormous size, these gentle and peaceful sharks do not pose any danger to humans and it is possible to swim by their side, observe and have the best experience of your life in their natural habitat.
They tell the ancient natives of the island that they saw them since they were little, but it was until the end of the 90s that they will offer recordings to the area that today is known as Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve.
Tours depart daily between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. from the whale shark dock, just off the CONANP palapa, where we embark on an hour and a half boat ride to the point sighting. During the journey we will be able to observe other marine species such as dolphins, devil manta rays and turtles.
It is important to identify that we are talking about a threatened species, classified as vulnerable worldwide and in Mexico protected by NOM 059-SEMARNAT-2010 and there is a swimming regulation that must be followed to the letter in order to carry out the activity.
Once we find the whale shark, the guide will give them instructions on how to enter the water, each person will have the opportunity to swim with the whale shark, the swimming time is independent of each swimmer.
After swimming with the whale shark, we will snorkel in a beautiful reef, while the captain and guide prepare a delicious fish ceviche. Back on the island we will enter the mangrove area where we will observe some species of seabirds and reptiles.
