The natural crossing to Holbox Island is the port of Chiquilá, which is nearly a two hour and thirty minutes drive from Cancun Airport and Puerto Morelos or a 3 hour Drive from Tulum or Playa del Carmen via the scenic Cenotes Route or an hour and a half driving in the Playa del Carmen toll road.
Once you arrive on Chiquila you can purchase your Ferry Tickets with one of the two ferry companies that operate in the área: Holbox Express or 9 Hermanos Boat Company.

from Chetumal to Holbox Island
Take the federal highway 307 towards Cancun, once you arrive to the Tulum Crossing you must take a detour towards Coba Archeological site and continue driving until you arrive to a town called “El Ideal” (ehl-eedeh-al) and take the detour towards Kantunilkin after you pass Kantunilkin the same road will take you to the port of “Chiquila” where you can park your car and cross in the local ferry.
Driving to Holbox Island from Cancún
Take the federal highway 180 towards Merida, approximately at kilometer 80 you must take the detour towards Kantunilkin after you pass Kantunilkin the same road will take you to the port of “Chiquila” where you can park your car and cross in the local ferry.
Driving to Holbox Island from Merida

Getting to Holbox by Bus
Chetumal: The ADO bus stands for Autobuses de Oriente (ADO). Get on board the bus from Chetumal to Cancún, and then from Cancún towards Chiquila.
Cancún: ADO Bus Departures. Monday thru Sunday 8:30hrs, 10:30 hrs, 14:15 hrs, 15:15hrs Chiquila – Cancún: 11:15hrs, 14:40hrs, 13:45hrs.
Mérida: ADO Bus Departures. Monday thru Sunday 6:45hrs Chiquila to Mérida: 16:45hrs
Valladolid: ADO Bus Departures. Monday thru Sunday 9:50hrs Chiquila to Valladolid: 16:45hrs
Chiquilá is a small town located to the north of the state of Quintana Roo and part of the Yum-Balam Federal preservation area. This colorful little town serves as a departure point for all the private boats and Ferries to Holbox Island. It has a Gas Station, a couple of restaurants and hotels and several public parking lots to leave your car there during your stay in Holbox Island.
Kantunilkin is a colorful town where the City Hall of the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas is located. Its location towards the northern part of the state is where you can find several cenotes. The town’s festivities are around December 8th.
