It’s travel time and we introduce you to the five essential tips for traveling to Holbox Island, Quintana Roo Mexico.
Accepted Currency
The official currency is the Mexican peso which is available in the following bill denominations: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos; and coins of: 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1, 2, 5 and 10 pesos. The US dollar is accepted in all exchange houses and some also accept the Canadian dollar and the euro. The main tourist establishments accept US dollars as payment. The use of the euro is not as common, but some businesses also receive it. Keep in mind that in rural areas and towns only accept Mexican pesos in cash as payment and that there is only one ATM in this beautiful island.
Credit Cards and ATMS
Until mid-2019 There were NO BANKS on Holbox Island. Today there is a bank called CI Banco as well as only one ATM in the Main Square for the entire Island.
Bring enough cash since there are still many establishments that don’t accept credit cards yet. It’s easier to book online even within the Island.
Parking
If you drive your way to Chiquila you will have to leave your car in one of the many parking lots available at Chiquila, the cost for parking your car overnight is between $100 pesos to $200 pesos per night.

Last Ferry to Holbox
The last Ferry that departs at 21:30h from Chiquila the last ferry that departs from Holbox to the Mainland is at 20:30h
Taxes on lodging
General taxes in Mexico apply to any kind of goods and is usually 16% IVA (Impuesto sobre el Valor Agregado) most of the Hotels already include these taxes in their rates but be sure to ask first, rather than to be surprised by the hidden fee.
ISH Taxes on lodging equals to 3%.
Mosquitos
Holbox is a Tropical Island, therefore you should be prepared with bug repellent to be safe from Mosquito bites.
Documents
Make sure to keep your documents safe at all times. Some hotels have safety deposit boxes at the front desk where you can leave your documents. It’s a good idea to make photocopy of your documents to carry around.
Water
It is not safe to drink the tap water in Holbox island, because of the high amount of minerals in the subsoil. Therefore it is always preferable to consume only bottled water and refill your bottles from the jumbo water bottle at any Hotel.
Electricity AC/DC in Holbox Island
Electricity AC/DC in Mexico is usually available in 110v, There are very few grounded power outlets so we highly recommend you carry an adapter along, Don’t forget to bring it with you.
Medications and Drugs
If you are under a medical treatment, please remember to bring enough medication. In Mexico many antibiotics and some other drugs are under a controlled sale regulation, which will require you to present a prescription so if you will require buying them while you’re here, do not forget to ask your doctor for an extra prescription and bring it with you.
